According to T.S. Eliot:
“What we call the beginning is often the end / And to make an end is to make a beginning. / The end is where we start from.”
When it comes to pushing words around in an attempt to make sense of something, there’s often not a logical beginning, middle or end. Sometimes there’s just a glimpse of something happening that needs to be recorded, often without any true idea of direction or objective. Just a nagging vision of a story that argues to be told, which holds true for fiction or non-fiction.
But even in this day of electronic this and digital that, there remains the pure power of the written word, regardless of how it’s delivered. As the indomitable Keith Richards has observed, “Everybody’s got a different way of telling a story–and has different stories to tell.” Maybe even more telling is that each of reacts to the story in a different way, rooted in what we know and feel and believe. And that makes it the job of the writer to breathe life into characters, weave a good story and then step aside so the reader can become immersed. At least that’s my humble opinion.
